There are three different exam formats used for police hiring in Michigan - MCOLES, EMPCO and the FrontLine National.
The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) sets the standards for becoming a police officer in Michigan. MCOLES does not define any specific entrance exam - each department defines their own process of screening and hiring new applicants. The minimum standards set by the MCOLES entry-exam covers Reading and Writing skills.
Some agencies outsource their entry testing to a testing service known as EMPCO. EMPCO uses the standard NCJOSI-1 for their entry-level exam.
The Michigan State Police now use the Frontline exam that includes Situational Judgment questions. This is also known as the NTN FrontLine or FrontLine National exam.
Getting prepared can be confusing. For your convenience, Sgt. Godoy has merged the test topics for both the EMPCO and MCOLSE exam formats into one great Michigan Police Prep.
